Stopping the merry-go-round

Every so often a day comes along when this merry-go-round we call life pauses for a brief time. We step off, take a deep breath of air, and take stock of our surroundings in a way that is impossible to do when the whirling merry-go-round is in motion.

Today was one such day for me. Like several fast-flowing rivers converging and merging into one large lumbering waterway, a confluence of events unforeseen just a few days ago transformed this day into a nearly unmanageable, highly emotional merry-go-round stop.

The details of these events are not nearly so important as the deep breath of air prompted by those events. The important things in life were reaffirmed for me in bold and unmistakable ways. Life is really all about two things: love, and family. If you get those two things right, in the end you have lived a good life.

On our way to the hospital this morning, the two of us drove by our nearby lake. It was just the right time of day, just the right day of the year, and just the right conditions of weather for us to witness a spectacular wonder. As we looked to the west over the lake and toward a gloomy November sky, the sun was shinning in full brilliance through a clear eastern sky behind us, lighting up a perfectly still lake, and painting the houses on the opposite shore and the surrounding trees with strikingly vibrant hues of spectacular color.

At that moment, I think we saw something of the Creator, and heard in the stillness of the moment the words, “I know what you are going through, and it will be alright.”
